Overview

At Murraywood Construction, we are working with McLaren Construction Group on a redevelopment and restoration project at St. Gabriel’s. In total, around 319 student bedrooms are proposed across two new blocks and the revamped St Gabriel’s and Woodthorpe halls. The new-builds on the eastern and western edges of the site would be five storeys in height at their tallest.

Established in 1920 by the Roman Catholic Passionist Sisters as women-only student accommodation, parts of St Gabriel’s Hall date back to the 1850s. Together with Woodthorpe Hall, this part of St Gabriel’s will be refurbished, while St David’s Hall – built in 1935 as part of wider proposals for a new church that were never realised – will be demolished as part of the redevelopment.

What are we doing?

As this is a listed site, we are maintaining the exterior walls of some of the buildings to preserve it’s historical background, whilst the roofs and interior walls of the buildings are being removed to enable the desired room sizes to be created.

Excavation work is being carried out, including the creation of lift pits and water pits, to support reinforced foundations, in addition to the preparation and casting of the reinforced suspended slab and the sub-station slab. We are also installing drainage and ducting, as well as stone formations to accommodate MEWP runs, to enhance accessibility and efficiency on-site. We also welcomed a specialist contractor to carry out gas/water-proof membrane works.
