I began my employment with Murraywood in July 2014, based on site at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital Project carrying out general labouring tasks.

I spent the next 12 months working on site alongside experienced groundworkers and site engineers; this experience helped grow my knowledge of groundworks and grabbed my attention leaving me wanting to develop my learning particularly in engineering at the time. There had been discussion that Murraywood would potentially be willing to sponsor me to enrol onto an academic course. After another couple of months on site, researching various construction roles, I decided that I was interested in the Quantity Surveying path.

Murraywood agreed to sponsor me and I enrolled onto a HNC in Construction course which was 2 years part-time (day release). I spent the next 2 years being mentored by Sean (one of our senior surveyors) down at the RLUH site; I gained knowledge of the day-to-day role of a Quantity Surveyor and assisted him on the project, carrying out various tasks including job costings, on-site measures and assisting with pricing variations.

I completed my HNC and as I was certain I wanted to continue the Quantity Surveying route, Murraywood agreed furthermore to sponsor me to undertake a Quantity Surveying degree.

Since I have started the degree, I have assisted other surveyors on various Murraywood projects over the last 2 years which has helped me expand my surveying knowledge and enabled my confidence to grow, allowing me to be carry out surveying operations independently with the support of the senior surveyors / commercial team within Murraywood.

I feel that the benefit of sitting a degree in Quantity Surveying extends my learning of the role beyond Groundworks. Whilst studying, I have covered various topics that I potentially wouldn’t cover whilst working for Murraywood.

I have experience of the construction industry first-hand through working here at Murraywood, the knowledge I have developed through work goes hand-in-hand with my degree and enables me to use site experience when completing tasks for university.

I am looking to complete my degree in 2020.
